Mission of the Committee
The focus of our work is to go to underserved communities and learn how the residents experience our democracy. We provide voter information in translation where we can, register voters, and engage with the people so that we can sustain our relationship with them over time.
Goals:
- Learn about issues and priorities for these underserved communities (especially those that good legislation can address)
- Facilitate their connections with legislators
- Expand the legislative news that the State League publishes to increase emphasis on these communities
Our Work
• Conducted a multi-cultural community Listening Session
• Delivered presentations on the importance of voting, how to register, and other voting mechanisms to people in the Latino community and at two Sno-Isle library locations
• Spoke before the Snohomish County Latino Coalition about the League’s advocacy work
• Continuously monitor the legislative session for the status of bills pertaining to the issues of social justice, criminal law, housing and homelessness, and health care and behavioral health equity
• Held Covid-safe voter registration events in 2020 for African American youth and at HopeWorks Station, a social enterprise facility for low-income people
In addition to the activities above, the Diversity Outreach committee helped to develop our comprehensive DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) Strategic Plan, which is guiding our League as we pursue culture change. We are working to achieve our vision of LWVSC as a trusted resource and a caring steward of inclusive democracy.
