How the League Is Involved with Legislative Issues

The mission of the League of Women Voters is to encourage informed and active participation in government, increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influence public policy through education and advocacy.

The League is proud to be nonpartisan, neither supporting nor opposing candidates or political parties at any level of government, but always working on vital issues of concern to members and the public.

League action on selected issues is guided by statements of position arrived at through a process of study and discussion. If consensus is reached on a position, this position becomes the basis for future action. Positions are developed at the local (LWVSC), state (LWVWA) and national (LWVUS) levels.

Tools for Advocacy

Know your Legislative district and your legislators. Just enter your address and select the WA Legislative tab at the top of the map to see the names and roles of your representatives.

Use the League's Legislative Newsletter to stay aware of hot topics in the current session and let your representatives hear your views. Check the Action Alerts if you have just a few moments, or dive more deeply into the background of Current Issues. During the legislative session you can also get additional insights about hot topics by registering for and attending ACTviaZoom (Action Coffee Time) presentations on Mondays from 10 am. to 11:00 am.

When you want to contact your representatives, be sure to research the Legislative bill number and see which house and what committee is considering it. Then, check the committee schedules. Now  you know the Bill number, meeting Date, and specific Committee, you can sign in to comment on an issue. Use the drop-down menus to identify the Committee name and meeting Date for which you can leave note of your position on the Legislative site or request to testify remotely.
