President's Pen - September 2025

Lisa Utter | Published on 9/8/2025

Looks like we have a very busy fall ahead of us. The constitutional crisis continues with the continued attempts to deport Kilmar Agrego Garcia to Uganda against court orders; the firing of Federal Reserve Governor Lisa D. Cook; the occupation of Los Angeles and Washington DC by National Guard troops; the signing of a new executive order making it a crime to burn the flag (an adjudicated freedom of expression); and the improper imposition of the executive branch into state and local authority to make decisions about elections, bail, and environmental regulations.  And to be clear, we remain nonpartisan – all of these issues have League positions that we use to back our stance, regardless of which party or who holds office.

Unite and Rise has been a serious focus nationally, and the Snohomish County League is doing its part to reach out to all communities, encourage people to sign the pledge to protect democracy and take daily actions to support democracy.

Local elections are coming up.  The candidate forum team has a full lineup of events (Sept. 22 to Oct. 15).

There’s also a panel presentation on the County Charter Commission (October 7) - that once-a-decade review of the charter that attracts a large and diverse slate of candidates - 49 this year.  There are far too many for our team to interview each, so the panel will:
  • Give information about the election - each voter votes for three from their county council district.
  • Describe how the Commission works.
  • Identify the proposals that have come out of the past Charter reviews - and the process after the proposals are made.
We've got many opportunities to participate this coming month, from the new state Media and News Literacy workshop (September 9); to National Voter Registration Day (September 13-16); Constitution Day activities (September 14-19); and Fire Up! (September 27), a morning to light up about this year's work plan. League members make a difference in our community.

Together in Action,
Lisa Utter, President
