“Action Brings Results!”
That may sound like something you heard from your parents, your teachers, or your life coach, so let’s examine the way in which that adage applies to League membership.
In Snohomish County, we typically add nearly five new members per month. But since January, our monthly new League membership numbers have more than doubled. See how the numbers break down in the chart to the right.

Why do you think this happened? We think that there is a direct relationship between League activism in the community, coupled with reaction to the policies of the current administration, and attracting new members.
Consider this: The new administration began at the end of January, and following its maxim of “Move fast, break things,” many changes occurred that defied our Constitution, our democracy, and our expectations of how our country should be governed. As many of us watched what was happening, the League was planning its response.
Our first public rally took place on March 4th with “Light for Our Democracy,” which was initiated and sponsored by LWVUS. Many hundreds of people throughout Snohomish County made signs and listened to speakers criticizing the administration’s policies. That was followed by the “Hands Off Our Democracy” rallies on April 4th and 18th. The League participated in a few more rallies before the organizers began endorsing some local candidates, which ended our involvement as a League.
The point is, whether it’s rallies, or tabling, or marching in parades, we are seen! Folks are attracted to the League because they know that they can join us and let their voices be heard, and that’s what defending our democracy is all about!
