President’s Pen - September 2024

Cathy Liu Scott | Published on 9/4/2024

The election season is upon us. Energy is building for the November 2024 Election. Although the League of Women Voters is nonpartisan (we don’t promote any specific candidates or parties) we do believe in empowering all voters! We believe that our vote is one of the most important ways we strengthen democracy. Here is some of how we are doing that this Fall.

This September 7th at our annual all-member meeting, aptly called Fire Up, we will give ourselves a refresher on how to set up a table to talk to people about their important right to vote. We will cover how we get voters registered, who can and can’t register to vote, what questions new voters ask, and what information they need that they don’t know to ask for. This will be a fun and interactive part of Fire Up. And, there will be door prizes! We hope to see you there (please log in and register here).

Also at Fire Up, you will hear about all the different activities that the League is involved in and how you can join with other like-minded folks to move our League of Women Voters priorities forward.

The week following our Fire Up meeting, we move into one of our biggest voter registration efforts - National Voter Registration Day (NVRD). For NVRD, we partner with Goodwill and Common Power to register voters in 3 Goodwill locations in Snohomish County. Please consider signing up for a 2 hour shift at any one of these locations: Everett, Lynnwood, and/or Marysville. After Fire Up you will be ready to go and Goodwill has a very nice tabling set-up for the volunteers. Common Power also hosts a training for all volunteers for NVRD.

Vonita Franisco is our wonderful tabling coordinator. If you have other places you would like to register voters, she will be happy to get you connected to our materials. Remember: she’s the coordinator - our members are the volunteers who set up the events and reach out to voters. This is how we Empower Democracy.

Have a good September! Be on the lookout for our League’s Candidate Forums that Karen Crowley and her team are putting together.
