Healthcare Committee Update

Tressa Kentner | Published on 9/4/2024

Healthcare and behavioral health will continue to be important issues for the State League. We will likely again see legislation that will impact healthcare mergers and consolidation. On a national level, reproductive rights will continue to be a major issue with constitutional measures on the ballot in several states. Providing care to people requiring abortions will be an increasing concern as abortion care is being concentrated in fewer states. We also may see an increase in harm caused by desperate people trying home remedies when medical services are not available.

For those of you concerned with healthcare mergers, Pro Choice Washington has been one of the major players in trying to pass legislation regulating mergers. Save Secular Health Care is another good source of information on the impact of healthcare mergers.

Whole Washington is focused on single payer health care in Washington state. They have been holding town hall meetings around the state focused on this issue.

During the next year, the healthcare committee will not be holding regular monthly meetings. I will be following legislation related to health care and behavioral health and will share that information in the League newsletter (The Voter) and with the distribution list of members interested in healthcare issues.
